It’s definitely been one roller coaster of a ride this week.  I gained a pound, lost two pounds then I gained a pound.  All in all, I lost 1.4 pounds this week.  I’ve got 15.4 pounds to go before I can get my big butt on my bicycle.

I went every day this week to the gym.  I spend on average 30 minutes each on the treadmill and the cycle.  I walk away with my clothes soaked in sweat and my legs heavy as lead.  Twice this week I’ve worked with the trainer learning how to operate the machines correctly.  Next week I’ll be adding at least some of the machines to my daily routine.

I had to change my routine somewhat to accommodate my wife.  This was due to my son having a car accident late Thursday afternoon.  It messed his car up somewhat and it had to be towed to a garage.  So, being the generous parents we are, we’ve given my wife’s car to him to drive during the next three weeks while his car is getting repaired.  This requires me to get up in the morning and take my wife to work in the mornings and making sure I’m there in the afternoon to pick her up.  This also requires me to pick her up during the day to take her to her doctor’s appointments which I had to do today.  The things we do for our kids.

Back to my weight loss.  I’m a little disappointed that I haven’t lost more weight than I have.  I’ve read that when you start exercising like I have, you tear or damage the muscles which become inflamed.  When this happens the body retains fluid around the inflammation which aids in the healing process.  This also adds weight to your body.  This is all new to me so I can’t tell you if it’s true or not.  I did read this on the internet so it’s got to be true, right? lol.

Hazards of Cycling (Part Two)

As much as I love cycling and the benefits that it has, you’ve got to consider some of the hazards that come with it.  Living in the suburbs, I have a limitless place to ride. But to get to it I have to travel on some busy roads.  While most vehicles obey the three-foot law, others do not.  And another thing, some do not take into consideration that while passing me they don’t think about the oncoming traffic.  I’ve seen several near misses.  One of these days I’ll get to witness a wreck.

Another hazard is dogs.  The one in this video is always there.  I’ve squirted water, yelled, kicked and nothing has stopped this dog from chasing me.  While this dog hasn’t tried to bite me others have.  The ankle biters are the worse. At least with the big dogs, they tend to stay on one side of you and bark.  The ankle biters are all over the road.  You never know where they’re going next. One of my wrecks was from dodging one of these ankle biters.

I’ve often thought about using mace to squirt on the dogs but after thinking about it I’ve decided that given the wind I don’t want this stuff coming back in my face. That would be bad. So, for now, I’ll stick with wasting my water by squirting the dogs.

In closing, let me say this.  The benefits of cycling will outway the bad.  Just keep a mindful eye on your surroundings if riding in the city.

Be careful out there

When I first started cycling, I was using a bicycle that I had purchased from a fellow co-worker some twenty plus years ago.  That meant the bike I was riding a bike that was close to thirty years old.  I used that bike for nearly a year before purchasing my new Cannondale.  The old bike, a Trek, had what I call suicide shifters.  The shifters were on the down tube and you had to take one hand off the handlebar to shift gears.  Most of the time I had no issue with doing so but sometimes, with the bike being so old and poorly maintained, the shifters didn’t work well and I would lose concentration and off the bike I would go.  Luckily, the whole time I rode this bike I never had any broken bones, just minor road rash.

The one word everyone hates to hear especially if one is in a hurry. Tonight I really wasn’t in a hurry but I did want to get home, change clothes, eat and head out the door on my bicycle.  That didn’t happen tonight because three cars and a semi wanted to get acquainted on the interstate this afternoon during rush hour traffic.  What normally takes me about 45 minutes to make the trip home, took me over two hours tonight.  Of course when I got up there to where the accident happened, there was nothing there.  The police had already cleared the accident.  Tomorrow night I get to go see my girls high school band perform their half time show so I won’t be riding tomorrow night.  There’s always Friday!!

The South and Snow Do Not Mix

My dad’s truck after he went off the road this morning.

The Meteorologist down here in the south do not know how to predict snow nor the amount that we may get. For the last two days they have been predicting that we will only get a dusting in our area, more to our south. They were wrong. We got over two inches and it all turned to ice very quickly.

Here in Birmingham, if we do get a dusting of snow, the city shuts down. We can’t handle snow or ice. We don’t know how to drive in it unlike the northern part of the United States. They see snow all the time but not us. We get measurable amounts about every ten years.
Today was absolutely horrid. It started about 10 am and by 10:30 am the roads were already icing up. By 11 am the roads were so bad that people were abandoning their cars and walking back to their jobs or preparing for a very long drive home. People who only live minutes away took hours to get home. Normally it only takes me an hour to get home and tonight it took over three hours. Wrecks everywhere.

The company I work for still has over 1100 people still there and they will still be there tomorrow. All roads are closed and may not open back up tomorrow. It’s only supposed to get up to 29 degrees f for the high tomorrow.

I got within 7 miles from my home before I had to park my truck and start hiking in. I had my cold weather gear so I wasn’t too worried. I had only hike about a mile when a car approached me and offered a ride. I rode with him nearly to my house when he had to park. I started walking again when this dune buggy contraption stopped and offered me a ride. No windshield mind you but what the hell, I didn’t want to walk so I hopped in. My wife and kids were waiting when I was dropped off. Now I’ve got to get my truck home sometime tomorrow but not sure how.

BTW, my dad is ok. He only had a few stitches put in his head but his truck is totaled. He is currently stuck at the hospital and will have to wait until we find suitable transportation to get him home. He’s warm and being taken care of so he’s good.
