It’s going to quite around the house for the next few days because my wife is not speaking to me. She told me not to do something and I did it anyway.  I had an accident with the band trailer on my way to a football game tonight.  The route we took led us downtown Birmingham where they are currently working on the bridges that go through the center of town.  It’s 5 o’clock traffic, it’s bumper to bumper and along some narrow streets.  A lady and her brother were sitting at a traffic light in the left turn lane.  I’m next to her waiting to go straight.  The light changed, I move forward and I hear a long and loud horn blow.  The lady pulls up next to me and tells me that I hit her car.  Now, not only did not hear the crash, I didn’t see it either.  I was not about to stop in the middle of the street and call the police to come and do a police report. But there was nowhere to pull over either. I drove for several blocks trying to find a place and all the while the lady was beside me in the turn lane trying to get me to stop.  We finally stopped at a traffic light long enough for me to communicate to her that I was looking for a place to pull over.  I finally found a parking lot big enough for me to pull into so we could exchange insurance cards and get a police report.  Which we had to wait over forty-five minutes for the cop to show up.

The school has insurance on the trailer so therefore the school’s insurance will take care of the car that I hit.  I was told that it would not go on my insurance but my wife does not believe this.  And this is where the rub comes in.  When I first sat down with these people to volunteer to haul the trailer, I signed a document stating that very same thing.  Plus, if anything happens to the trailer or any of the contents I would not be held responsible. My wife did not want me to volunteer for this.  In fact, she doesn’t want me to do anything outside the home since I retired.  She always has some excuse for why I shouldn’t do it.  I get paid $100 each time I haul the trailer no matter how short a run or how far. So far I’ve raised $800 and that’s pretty easy money.

As you can see there wasn’t much damage to the car I hit but still, I hit a car.  My wife is worried that regardless of who pays for it, this will make our insurance costs go up.  I haven’t had an accident in over thirty years and I really doubt our insurance will go up but I can’t get that in my wife’s head.

Our team is in the playoffs and they won their game tonight.  Next week we travel again to another school but this time we don’t have to go through town to get there.  Originally, this was supposed to be my final night but because they’re in the playoff’s we have yet another game to go to.  This could be over an hour away so I’m not really looking forward to hauling the trailer that far. Is it a bad thing to hope they lose so next week would be their last?

I learned to drive a straight shift on this truck.  She holds a lot of memories for me.  My brother and I used her for our grass cutting business while we were in high school.  We hauled tons of firewood out of the deepest woods that my dad could find.

Everytime I look at her I see the big dent on the front fender.  I laugh now every time I think about what happen.  My brother and I were learning how to drive and it was my turn to drive around the yard.  I got behind the wheel and was arguing with my brother who was outside the truck as I was backing up.  I ran into a power poll that sat dead center of our side yard.  I was so mad and upset.  Dad wasn’t too happy either.

She started leaking oil back before I graduated high school.  A friend of mine decided that we could rebuild her.  I needed the experience anyway so we rebuilt the engine.  We spent about two months working evenings and weekends.  Got her cranked and damn if she didn’t leak worse after we fixed her than before.  Dad took it to a shop and they fixed it right.

It’s been sitting up for several years now.  My brother in law decided he would sand it down and repaint her.  He spent several weekends sanding but never got around to the painting.  That was over ten years ago.  Dad has moved it around the yard via tractor but it hasn’t been cranked in over ten years. She sits rusting away.

The South and Snow Do Not Mix

My dad’s truck after he went off the road this morning.

The Meteorologist down here in the south do not know how to predict snow nor the amount that we may get. For the last two days they have been predicting that we will only get a dusting in our area, more to our south. They were wrong. We got over two inches and it all turned to ice very quickly.

Here in Birmingham, if we do get a dusting of snow, the city shuts down. We can’t handle snow or ice. We don’t know how to drive in it unlike the northern part of the United States. They see snow all the time but not us. We get measurable amounts about every ten years.
Today was absolutely horrid. It started about 10 am and by 10:30 am the roads were already icing up. By 11 am the roads were so bad that people were abandoning their cars and walking back to their jobs or preparing for a very long drive home. People who only live minutes away took hours to get home. Normally it only takes me an hour to get home and tonight it took over three hours. Wrecks everywhere.

The company I work for still has over 1100 people still there and they will still be there tomorrow. All roads are closed and may not open back up tomorrow. It’s only supposed to get up to 29 degrees f for the high tomorrow.

I got within 7 miles from my home before I had to park my truck and start hiking in. I had my cold weather gear so I wasn’t too worried. I had only hike about a mile when a car approached me and offered a ride. I rode with him nearly to my house when he had to park. I started walking again when this dune buggy contraption stopped and offered me a ride. No windshield mind you but what the hell, I didn’t want to walk so I hopped in. My wife and kids were waiting when I was dropped off. Now I’ve got to get my truck home sometime tomorrow but not sure how.

BTW, my dad is ok. He only had a few stitches put in his head but his truck is totaled. He is currently stuck at the hospital and will have to wait until we find suitable transportation to get him home. He’s warm and being taken care of so he’s good.
