Alabama, CML, Doctor, health, Kids, Leukemia, Million Dollar Band, Oncologist, Parents, Sick, University of Alabama

I started back on my CML meds last Monday and to be honest I think my breathing has gotten a little worse. I’ve started climbing the steps at work a little more and trying to maintain at least 10,000 steps in a day. I spoke at length to my oncologist last Monday the day I started back on my Sprycell and he told me that the majority of the people who end up with water retention will do better at a lower dosage.  I’m now at 80 mg instead of the 100mg that I was once on.

I’ve decided not to just sit at home waiting to see if my lungs will fill back up with fluid.  I don’t really feel like getting out and doing anything but I feel that I’ve at least got to try  and get what little exercise that I can get.  I think it could only help matters if I get off the couch and do something.

Yesterday, my wife and I met our son at the university where my daughters are attending.  They’re both in the band, one plays the sax and the other is a band manager.  Yesterday was their parent preview show.  It was awesome seeing my daughter’s perform. I got to meet one of their roommates and enjoyed going out to dinner afterwards.  As usual it was hard for us to leave after visiting with them.

Today I went to my parents house to check on them as well as my bees.  It’s been at least two months since I’ve done either one.  The bee yard was grown up with weeds and it took everything I had to use my weedeater to chop down the weeds just so I could get to the beehive.  After about an hour of cleaning up I went and sat with my parents for a couple of hours.

It was hard to leave my parents. They are both getting up in age and their health is not as good as it used to be.  My mom had to have more surgery a couple of weeks ago on her diaphragm due to finding a hole where her colon and her intestine were coming through.  The doctors seem to think that this was caused by the accident they had back in February.

The above picture is of the band managers.  The young lady is my daughter.  What a  trooper.

After being off for two weeks from being sick and in the hospital, this past week was tiresome to say the least.  I did a lot of traveling for work and I got to meet the new guy they’ve hired to give me some help.  Next week starts with Monday off so I’ll only have to work four days.

I’m going to be a proud father for a minute and share a picture he sent me.  This picture was taken just after the Alabama Crimson Tide won its 16th National Championship.  One of his section members sent this to Mugshots and they are going to have a canvas print made to hang in it’s Tuscaloosa location.  They already have one hanging that was taken just after the 15th title game a few years ago.  What a way to go out his senior year!!

After spending another day stuck inside this house I’ve decided that I’m going to venture out tomorrow for a couple of hours.  I think the change of scenery will do me good.  I’m still having coughing fits but other than that I’m starting to feel better.

For those that follow football, Alabama won the SEC Championship game against Florida tonight. If it weren’t for my son being in the Million Dollar Band I probably wouldn’t care who one.  This is his last year of being in the band and I would love it if the team won the national title.  Don’t know if they have a chance or not but at least they’re in the playoffs.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, Alabama Football, Band Compititon, Birthday Celebration, Family Time, High School Band, MDB, Million Dollar Band

I had a great day today, busy but it was a really good day.  I got over my little rant that I had last night and decided to put it behind me.  My wife and I traveled nearly two hours to watch my daughter’s band compete.  It was cold and had a constant mist falling throughout the time we spent there.  It was after 11pm when I got a text saying that they were loading the busses to come home.

After spending some time at the competition, we went to my parents house where I spent a couple of hours with my mom and dad and all my siblings.  We had a couple of family members have birthdays this month so we met to have a small celebration.

While I’m waiting on my daughters to come home I’m watching the Alabama vs Georgia game. I had it recorded so I could watch it when I got home. I mainly watch it to see if they happen to show the band and of course they did and who do I see?  Yes, I see my son on the tube, wet and soaked to the bone but at least he looks like he’s having fun.  My son is living his dream.

I was under the weather and didn’t feel like posting last night so I guess I’m another day in the whole.  Oh well.

Spent the day in Tuscaloosa watching my son practice with the Million Dollar Band.   We left soon after the band marched down the street toward the stadium.  My team is loosing and unless a miracle happens they won’t win tonight.  But, that’s ok.  I got to see my son play out his dream of being in the Million Dollar Band.  He should graduate in December so he doesn’t have much longer.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, Baritone, College, Million Dollar Band, Son

After all the yard work I did yesterday my back decided to go on strike today.  It’s been a rough morning.  I’ve made it to the recliner and have been able to do some computer stuff and while I was on FB I found where someone took a picture of my son directing the baritone section.  I was quite surprised.  This is his second senior year.  He should graduate in December of this year.

His life long dream has always been to go to Alabama and play in the Million Dollar Band.  The college is only about 45 minutes away from us but also one of the most expensive one around.  We had the Pact program but that only covered a little amount, the rest is with student loans.  The fact that he wanted to go and got accepted into the college and got accepted into the Million Dollar Band made it clear that this is where he should go.  I’m very proud of my son and all the accomplishments that he has made.  I think every parents dream is for his kids to do better than they did.  My son has surpassed this in many ways.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Collage Graduation, Flower Mound, Graduation, Marcus High School, Million Dollar Band, Texas, University of Alabama

Woke up at 3am to call my son to make sure he was awake.  He was not.  He had set his alarm to wake him at 3:15am so I woke him 15 minutes earlier than he had planned.  He assured me that he would get on up and get ready to meet the buses.  I received a text at 6am stating that he was on his way.

I never really got back to sleep before my alarm clock went off so I woke up feeling like crap.  I stayed pretty busy at work so that was good.  It didn’t give me time to sit and get sleepy, especially after lunch.  After work I rushed home, ate supper and jumped into the shower.  I had to help with the flag ceremony at our high school football game.  It was a nail biter.  The game nearly went into overtime but we pulled it out.

Tonight, my son is in Flower Mound Texas.  The band played an exhibition performance at Marcus High School for their during their half time show. I’m going to see if I can post the link to the show.  400 plus members on a football field is a lot of people.

My son is a second year senior and this will be his last year in the band.  He should graduate in December.  I am a very proud dad.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, Early Morning, MDB, Million Dollar Band, Parents, Photography, UofA

My son, who is in the Million Dollar Band, leaves in the morning heading to Dallas Texas.  The buses load at 4 am in the morning. This is his fifth year playing for the University of Alabama and he’s used to getting up early to load the buses to head out on long trips but not this early.  He told me this morning that he will be getting up at 3am to get ready so he can get to the buses early.  He like to get there early to get a good seat on the bus.  Band members who are late pay hell and get reprimanded for not being on time.  I remember a couple of years ago a young lady overslept and by the time she got to where the busses were parked the bus had already left.  She and her roommate drove for nearly an hour to flag down the bus for her to load it.  The band director was not pleased and said “Never again will the busses stop for a student that is late.  He/she will simply not make the trip and receive not only a reprimand but will be forced to sit out the next performance.” So with that said, I will be doing my parental duty by setting my alarm clock for 3 am so that I can call my son so that I know he is up and getting ready so he won’t be late.  After all, he is one of the section leaders for his section and I would really hate for him to start the season showing a bad example to his section.  I just hope I can go back to sleep after I make the phone call.  He can sleep on the bus.  My boss would probably frown on me taking a nap while at work.

I had a very good day today.  I was able to spend part of this morning with my son.  He plays the baritone in college and they were rehearsing their show.  Afterwards we had lunch and got to spend some time together.  Once I arrived home, the rest of the family and I went out to a local steak house and ate.  I’m so stuffed right now I can hardly move.  Didn’t get a bike ride in today but maybe tomorrow.  We shall see.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, BBQ, College Tour, Football, Marching Band, Million Dollar Band

_1TH6541

I spent this morning and some of this afternoon taking my daughters on a college tour at the University of Alabama.  My son already goes there and we’ve already been on this tour with him.  After the tour we went and visited the newly renovated Butler Field.  This is where the Million Dollar Band practices.  In years past they’ve been having to deal with an uneven field where water would always stand when it rained.  Now it’s all terf with painted end zones just like a regular football field.  It’s really nice.  They did an awesome job.  I’m glad that they’ve finally decided to spend some money on the band instead of just the football teams.

After which we went out to eat at Dreamland BBQ, a place known for their BBQ ribs.  Boy was it good.  My son is home until the end of July before he has to leave for band camp.  I’m looking forward to spending some time with him before he has to leave again.
