A Few Thoughts and Other Entanglements

As I sit here tonight, they are predicting severe weather for tomorrow evening.  The biggest threat is north Alabama but they include large hail, strong winds, and a few strong tornados.  I can handle the severe thunderstorms but tornados is another thing.  I’m still not over the tornado outbreak of 2011 that wiped out nearly half of our town and killed eleven people in our community.

What I’m also doing is putting together a few videos that I’ve created.  Most of which have been taken to try and boost the city’s morale. We have several city FaceBook pages and each one of them consist of negativity about our community.  We lost a lot of homes and families right after the tornado.  With these homes destroyed, many of which were never rebuilt and the families moved out.  With that said, we lost a lot of tax money.  Our city doesn’t have the money for a lot of the upkeep and people are complaining about the trash, businesses closing, and crime.  What I’m trying to do is post these videos on these pages showing what we have to be proud of; A nice athletic complex, a nice school, a storm shelter, etc.

During the tornado of 2011, we thought we had lost the brand new school.  Some kids and I were on a bus with the band heading to Orlando for a school trip when the tornado hit.  There were all sorts of rumors that told of the school burning, people lying on the ground dead and many other stories.  Most of which were true but the school did not catch on fire.

The tornado hit about a half a mile from the school and the athletic complex.  Like I said, a lot of rumors floated around and we were happy that we didn’t lose either of these landmarks.  My house was also spared thankfully.  The athletic complex is one of the jewels of our community.  Between the complex and our park (I don’t have a video of it as of yet), the kids of our community wouldn’t have a place to go and play.  My kids were fortunate to be able to spend a great deal of time at the park and they couldn’t wait to go and play in the creek.

I think we take for granted these places that our city has supplied for us. We always focus on the negativity instead of the positive.  I’m really hoping these storms that are predicted for tomorrow will pass us by. I’m really hoping!!  I’ll let you guys know how we faired tomorrow night.

3/16/2018 Oncologist Update

Oncologist Update: Because of some miscommunications with the insurance company, go figure, I have not been approved to be on my new medicine yet. I may end up walking the paperwork to the department myself if they keep losing it. Anyway, it’s been six weeks or more since I’ve had any CML meds and we, more so me than the doctor it seems, are starting to get a little concerned that my numbers might get a little high. If the insurance company approves the meds, it could take up to three weeks before my meds arrive. Nothing to do but wait. But, as luck would have it, the representative for the new drug was there in his office. He gave my doctor a card for a free 30 day supply which should arrive by Tuesday of next week. This should give my insurance company time to process my approval for this drug.

Bloodwork. It’s been six weeks since my last lab. My last one wasn’t good at all. Every one of my numbers was either very high or very low. Yesterday’s numbers were normal for the most part. This was in large part the effect of the drug I was on. The side effects just made my daily life impossible to deal with.

New Drug: Bosulif is the name of the new drug. Right now I’ve been on two of the most common and there are only a few left that is approved by the FDA. Thanks to Karen Davis-Hudson she eased my mind about some of the side effects that were mentioned in the insert. However, Karen, I think you mentioned that 1/10 developed fluid retention, my doctor said 4/10. Not that much of a difference. The other side effects I think I can handle.

The Good News: The doctor and I both agree that the fluid in my lungs is gone and we’re going to have a positive attitude that it will not return and that this medicine will be the last one I have to be on because this one will work. I can breathe, my color is back and most importantly, I feel good. So much so, that if the weather holds, I’m going to try to get my bicycle out one day this weekend.

This is all due to all the prayers that have been lifted up for me and my family. Thank you so much.

2018 Pinewood Derby

I remember going to these things when my boy was in cub scouts. I would always end up working on the car because he would never do it the way I wanted him to do it.  We had fun working together anyway.  It was a good time for us.  He was at the, what I would like to call, the fun age.  We would always find something to do together.  He loved the scouts as did I.  This gave us a wonderful opportunity to be together plus it gave him an opportunity for him to be around kids his own age.  I really miss those days.  He’s grown now, moved out of the house not long ago and into an apartment not far from here.

Boy Scouts has changed somewhat since I was a boy scout those many years ago.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the program and what they have to offer.  You may not like what’s happened within the past few years, neither do I in some aspects but there’s one thing they still offer, and that’s a program that keeps the boys out of trouble and in doing so they have the opportunity to learn something.

I digress.  This article was supposed to be about the Pinewood Derby which was held yesterday.  Eighteen cars were entered from all over our district.  Nearly all the boys won some sort of trophy.  They had to win their division just be able to race their car in this race so they had to win something before they got there.  Everyone had a great time.  Hope you enjoy the video.

Another One Got Their Wings

Today I got the news that a co-worker passed away.  We were kind of expecting it but still, nonetheless.  He’s had kidney problems most of his adult life and has had two transplants.  This wasn’t what he died of though.  He had a stroke during Christmas and never really got over it.  He’s had several mini strokes since then.  He left his daughter of 21 years.

This was the third one in about a month.  My 80-year-old aunt died from complications from diabetes, my bothers mother in law died from bone cancer and now my co-worker.  I hope this will be the last one for a while.

Memories of a Winter Day

Taken just before Christmas on my way home from work.  So afraid of another “Snowmageddon” which left over 1,000 people stranded at work for three days, our company decided to let us go home early.  We don’t get much snow down here in the deep south but when we do it shuts down the entire city/state.

A dash cam captured my trip from work to the first traffic light.  I edited it and added music to try to make it more interesting.

Hope you enjoy.

Retirement

Only 163 more days. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, although dim, I can still see it. Some days, like today, it seems that it will never get here. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll be doing once I retire but I’m sure it won’t be dealing with some of the crap that I have to deal with now on a daily basis. I know that I’ll have to find something to do otherwise I’ll get as big as the side of the barn. I have several hobbies that will keep me from sitting on the couch and there’s always yard work to do. Maybe I’ll find a job that I can drive people around a couple days a week. Who knows?

Update 3/4/2018

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted an update and I do apologize for that. With my health such a roller coaster and my job is as crazy as it is well, I just haven’t taken the time to write.

First of all, let me say that I’m feeling better today than I have in years.  Seriously, with all the crap my body has been going through, it’s about time.  But, I have a feeling that it’s about to change for the worse again.

We found out that the meds for my CML was causing all the fluid to build up around my heart and lungs; more so the lungs.  In short, the oncologist took me off my meds and my pulmonologist took 1.5 liters of fluid off my left lung.  He left fluid in my right lung due to him not wanting the infection to set in on either or both the lungs.  A heavy dose of Lasix and now my right lung is clear of fluid.  In two weeks I see my oncologist and a new med will be prescribed and one of the main side effects is fluid retention.  Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

At this writing, I will be retiring on August 15th of this year.  After 32 years I’ve finally had enough, well, I’ve had enough long ago but I can officially retire when I turn 55 so I’m turning in my notice.  I’ve got a lot of hobbies so I know I will stay busy.

I’m working on a Youtube video about the tornado that went through our city back in 2011 and I’m doing some test shots with my drone.  Let me know what you think of it.  In the video that I’m working on, I will hopefully show some areas of our city that still shows some damage that the tornado left.  I will also show areas of major improvements that wouldn’t have happened if the tornado hadn’t visited our city.

There’s a lot more going on but I’ll post about it later.  I hope you enjoy the video.

Weight Loss Struggles 2

It’s been nearly two weeks and ten pounds since my last post.  This low carb diet seams to be working for me.  I’m no longer hungry all the time and I’m no longer having cravings like I used to have.  This Saturday will mark one month and two weeks since I’ve started this diet.  My starting weight was 295 and today I weighed in a whopping 257 pounds.  There are still items in the frezzer that I should not eat but their voices are not as loud as once before.

One word about my last post.  I stated that I had ridden on my bike some three thousand miles in the past ten years and walked some hundred or so miles during this time.  You can say what you want but I’m damn proud of those miles.  You may do the same in a weeks time but I’m not you.  I’m me.  I’m a lot different than you and nothing you or anyone can change that.  We are who we are regarless of what sickness or disease we may have.  Each of us a has a choice to make whether or not we want to do something about it or not.  I have chosen not to use my sickness as an excuse to sit on the couch but I’m still not able to get out and ride as much as I’d like to so, I walk instead.

I will continue to keep doing what I’m doing.  If and when my breathing gets where it needs to be I’ll hop on my bike and ride like the wind.  For now I’ll walk to the track and walk my five miles before heading home.  In the mean time, if you’re reading this and need a word of encouragement, don’t give up and don’t let others dictate what you can and can’t do.  You can do it, just do it one day at a time.  You didn’t put this weight on in a weeks time so it’s going to take some time taking it off.

Good luck to you!!

Weight Loss Struggles

Why is it so hard to diet and lose weight? The majority of people I know struggle with losing weight and I know only a few who struggle putting weight on. I can do well with my diet for a week or so and only lose about a pound or two while it only takes one day to screw it up and eat something that I’m not supposed to eat and gain two pounds at one sitting. It doesn’t make since. Why does our bodies hate us so much? I hate with a passion to lose weight that I’ve already lost before. And for some reason I know it will be there when I weigh in the mornings. It’s like it’s got a big sign that says “I’m Back!!” and then it takes me another two weeks to lose it again.

For once in my adult life I’d like to weigh what I did in high school. My metabolism was good and I could eat anything I wanted to and not have to worry about my weight. I can remember going through the lunch room line twice each day because the first lunch didn’t fill me up. The lunch room ladies always had my tray ready for me when I returned. I especially liked pizza days. I weighed a whopping 186lbs back in those days. Of course, I had band, cycling in the neighborhoods and backyard football games to help burn all those calories.

Can you imagine me weighing 186lbs today? Lol, It can be done I guess, if I set my mind to it. I really don’t see it happening though. Afterall, I’ve got to be realisitc.

For me it’s not just losing the weight, as most of you know I’ve got other health problems going on. But, for right now, my sugar is my main concern. Up until three weeks ago 300 was the norm. No matter what I ate or didn’t eat it was always way above normal. I thought my meter was busted at one point. My Dr. put me on insulin and that really didn’t help either. My metabolism had become non existent. I tried walking, riding my bicycle but the weight would not come off.

I’ve got so many support personel that it’s really funny I guess. There’s the wife and kids of course, my parents and then there’s my two cardiologists, my dietitian, my PC doctor, my pulmonologist, and my sleep study doctor all pulling for me to lose weight. Ok, even a few coworkers too, although I dont think they’ll admit to it. I had one doctor who wasn’t “pulling for me to lose weight” he TOLD me to lose weight. It was the surgon who removed my apendix. He told me because I was so LARGE that he spent most of his time in surgery locating my apendix. It’s no wonder I was so sore afterwards. I was really offended by this but do you think that it made me lose weight. Nope. Maybe for a week or two and then I was back on my all you can eat diet.

It wasn’t until my PC told me that he had done all he could do and the rest was up to me. If I wanted to see my son and my girls graduate high school I had better get my weight under control. It was then a light went off and I realized that I had better listen to him. At that point I was at the heaviest weight I had ever been in my life. This was back in 2007

Today, I’m a little over 80lbs lighter. It’s taken me ten years to lose what I have lost. Not just one diet but a multitude of diets, I’ve traveled over 3500 miles on my bike, I’ve walked hundreds of miles either on my treadmill, roads or trails and I’ve eaten and drank stuff that would make the strongest of stomachs puke all because I needed to lose weight. Losing weight is not for the faint of heart. It’s a struggle.

For those of you who read this and are of perfect health, my hats off to you for keeping your body in shape. But for those who are like me and struggle with weight loss, I stand and applaud you. I know what you are going through and I know that you would rather have that chocolate ice cream bar that’s in your freezer right now calling your name than to eat that piece of card board that’s shaped like a piece of bread.

One final note. Find a plan that works for you and stick with it. Right now I’m doing the low carb diet and it’s working. I’ve lost some weight and my sugar is better, still not perfect but getting there. I’m a long way from being where I want to be and I’m not giving up. Neither should you. You can do it. We can do it together. Thanks for reading.

I’m a bit late posting this but I’ve just now got around to it.  This trail head in the Jasper/Double Springs area of the Bankhead National Forest.  If you’re ever in this area I would highly recomend this place.

The trail starts off down hill for about twenty yards or so.  Which is fine but you’ve got to come back up.  The trail itself is rather nice.  It’s farly wide for the most part but does narrow down to a single person for a bit before reaching the falls.

My wife and I followed this trail for about a mile and a half when we saw a young lady sitting on a log off to the side of the trail.  Surrounding her was another female and a male friend.  The lady on the log looked like she was having some heat related issues.  I offered one of my bottles but they refused any help from us.  Evedently, the hill going down to the falls was steeper than I had read.

_2TH2692

Going down this hill was tough on my legs but not near as tough as going up it.  Once to the falls you had to climb down to the creek to get any pictures of the falls.  There were several young people swiming and I feel sure the water was cold.  My wife didn’t venture down to the falls because she was afraid she’d fall.  The same thought had entered my mind as well but I just walked a little over a mile to get here and I wan’t going to let a little climb turn me around.

_2TH2698

As we guessed, the climb out of there was slow for me.  It took me a while for me to reach the flatter area because I had to stop and catch my breath several times.  Once we made it to the top of the hill it wasn’t so bad getting back to out truck.  With the exception of the last twenty yards.

For anyone with breathing issues or congestive or heart issues, I would not recommend this trail.  All others, have at it. Simeple two mile in/out trail.
