Last week I put this 14in Lodge cast iron skillet in my electrolysis tank and today I pulled it out, scrubbed it with soap and water, dried it with a towel, coated it with Crisco and put in my gas grill for several hours to start the re seasoning process.  It took most of the afternoon but she’s finally done.

After the skillet cooled down I couldn’t wait to try it out.  It was after 8pm but still I cooked up a pound of bacon.  This skillet is so big that I had to use two eyes on my electric stove.  Bacon is gone now, all eaten up.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, Football, Million Dollar Band, Sick

_1TH7349_50_51_tonemapped

I was under the weather and didn’t feel like posting last night so I guess I’m another day in the whole.  Oh well.

Spent the day in Tuscaloosa watching my son practice with the Million Dollar Band.   We left soon after the band marched down the street toward the stadium.  My team is loosing and unless a miracle happens they won’t win tonight.  But, that’s ok.  I got to see my son play out his dream of being in the Million Dollar Band.  He should graduate in December so he doesn’t have much longer.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Dehydrated, Hot Shower, Humid, Roof Top Work, Sick, Too Hot

1TH_0380

I had to work on the roof today for far too long.  At least the temps were in the mid 80’s and it was overcast for most of the day but the humidity was up and that’s what did me in.  By the time quitting time came around I was soaked to the bone.  I was a bit tired when I got in my truck to go home but the closer I got home the worse I felt.

After arriving home I took a long, hot shower and I felt a little bit better.  My wife had supper ready but I just didn’t feel hungry enough to eat.  Right now I’m sitting in my recliner and as soon as my girls get home I’m heading to bed.  Maybe I’ll feel better after a good nights sleep.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Cast Iron, Doctor Appointment, Electrolysis Tank, Sportsman Chicken Fryer

20150916_154954-1

I had a doctors appointment today that supposed to have lasted only about two hours.  In fact, that’s what I told my boss.  When I got to the doctor’s office they decided to run more tests than originally planned.  I had to leave the doctor’s office and head to the hospital where I spent five hours waiting, taking more tests and waiting some more.  I really hate having to burn a day at the doctor’s office.

The above picture is part of a Sportsman Chicken Fryer.  The top, pictured here, is a griddle on one side and a grill on the inside.  I placed this piece in my electrolysis tank earlier this evening. I will leave it in the tank for a couple of days to remove all the rust.  Of course, as soon as I take it out I will have to begin the re seasoning process or else it will immediately start rusting again.  I’ll probably check on it Friday evening but I won’t have time to start the re seasoning process until either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Blackberry Cobbler, Cast Iron, Dutch Oven, Peach Cobbler

A few years ago my son crossed over into Boy Scouts and one of the leaders was doing a sampling of some of his cooking.  He was cooking a peach cobbler out of one of his Dutch Ovens.  It reminded me of the days that I would visit my grandfather when he used to cook out of a Dutch Oven down on the river bank when we went fishing.  The night at the scout hut I had one of the best peach cobblers that I think I’ve ever had.  The cook did not want to share how his recipe which really drove me nuts. After that night I was determined to learn how to cook out of a Dutch oven.  At last count I have over 16 Dutch Ovens all of different shapes and sizes.  Not including all the cast iron skillets that I use to cook in.

When in scouts I tried to teach the boys the art of cooking in cast iron.  Cooking in a Dutch Oven is somewhat different than cooking on a stove and you really have to be careful when cleaning cast iron.  If you talk to ten people on how to clean your cast iron I’m sure you’ll at least get nine different ways to clean it.

I have my own little catering business where I cook a main dish and a desert all in cast iron.  While I’m cooking I have people come up to me and tell me that they’ve never seen anything cook out of a Dutch Oven.  They’ve only seen these ovens used as a flower pot.  I don’t mind the questions.  I enjoy spreading the art of cooking out of cast iron and hopefully keeping it alive.

I have many, many recipes of anything from rabbit stew to peach cobbler that I’d be happy to share.  Just give me a shout.

The above picture is of a blackberry cobbler.  It’s to die for and very simple to fix even in your conventional oven.

We’ve had a cool snap the last few mornings.  With the temps being in the upper 50’s, it’s been real pleasant.  The days have heated up to the mid to upper 70’s and it’s been real tough to remain inside.  I’m looking forward to doing some hiking in the woods, maybe even a campout or two.  The best part of Fall to me is being able to sit by a campfire and fellowship with friends and family.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Alabama, Baritone, College, Million Dollar Band, Son

12004733_10154181984178332_8973990493516869983_n

After all the yard work I did yesterday my back decided to go on strike today.  It’s been a rough morning.  I’ve made it to the recliner and have been able to do some computer stuff and while I was on FB I found where someone took a picture of my son directing the baritone section.  I was quite surprised.  This is his second senior year.  He should graduate in December of this year.

His life long dream has always been to go to Alabama and play in the Million Dollar Band.  The college is only about 45 minutes away from us but also one of the most expensive one around.  We had the Pact program but that only covered a little amount, the rest is with student loans.  The fact that he wanted to go and got accepted into the college and got accepted into the Million Dollar Band made it clear that this is where he should go.  I’m very proud of my son and all the accomplishments that he has made.  I think every parents dream is for his kids to do better than they did.  My son has surpassed this in many ways.

I don’t mind yard work.  In fact, I really enjoy it especially when you work several hours and after you’re done you can actually see that you’ve accomplished something.  I had plans on doing a ride today but because I was on my feet for several hours my feet swelled so much that I couldn’t get my cycle shoes on. So, I opted to do some yard work.

It’s been a while since I’ve done the edging.  My wife likes to cut the grass so I let her but as you can see the grass has started growing over the sidewalk.  I’ve been so busy as of late and I just haven’t had the time to get to it.  We won’t discuss the condition of my backyard.  I’m waiting for the cooler weather to let everything go dormant so that I can see where I’m stepping.

12004907_10153161173548946_990590239291087196_n

After the trimming was done I even spent some time cleaning a propane gas grill.  The scouts had let this thing get so nasty that I had to use Easy Off and then a pressure washer to get the thing cleaned. I even spent the time testing it out just to make sure the grill would light up.  It did.

365 Day Photo Challenge, ACT Test, Football Game, High School, Homecoming, Injured Player, Shoes, Sports, Suits

https://tchphotography.smugmug.com/Botanical-Gardens/i-PF3SjQf/A

Tonight was homecoming at my daughters school and one of my daughters was on the homecoming court and I was her escort. I had to wear a suit and tie and I don’t know anyone that hates to wear a suit and tie more than I do.  Not to mention the torturing device known as dress shoes.

My plan was to go to the game, participate in the halftime festivities, go home and change clothes and be back before 4th quarter.  All in all I shouldn’t have to be in a suit more than a couple of hours.  It didn’t work out that way.  Thirty minutes into the game a huge storm with major lightning and the game had to be postponed.  After a two hour lightning delay the game resumed and by this time my feet were really hurting.  I managed to go through the homecoming festivities on the field and soon afterwards I was on my way home to change clothes.

When I returned about thirty minutes later only about ten minutes had elapsed on the time clock and there was a man down on the field.  Was told a back injury and I hope the young man is ok.  Normally we’re home around 10:30pm on Friday nights after a home game.  Tonight with the weather, the injured player and homecoming festivities, I got home around 11:45pm.  A little later than normal.

Tomorrow my girls have the ACT test to take and I’m really hoping they get enough sleep.  One of my daughters is still recovering from having the Flu so I’m not sure if she will feel like taking the test tomorrow or not.

365 Day Photo Challenge, Busy, Calendar, Photography, Saturday

https://tchphotography.smugmug.com/Chicago/i-JHW6Zz4/A

I’ve just completed putting in dates in my calendar and I have come to the realization that between now and the end of the year every Saturday and Sunday is booked with something.  I’m not exactly sure how this could have happened.  Fortunately, most of the Saturday’s are booked with family events and there are a few that I have reserved for cycling events.  I would like to have a couple of Saturdays just to sit around the house and do absolutely nothing. Maybe in my next life.
