Going to the shoe store has become one of my worst nightmares. Not everyone sells the shoes in the width that I need. In fact, there are only two stores in the Birmingham metro area that sell shoes in my size.

For those who are new here, I have Charcot. Charcot is a condition that makes my bones brittle. Two years ago, I unknowingly broke my right foot. It couldn’t be a normal break; it had to be broken in several places. What makes it worse, I didn’t know that it was broken for a couple of weeks. I have neuropathy in both feet, so I have no feeling. I only noticed when my foot was swollen so bad that my foot no longer fit in the shoe.

To make a long story short, I was in a splint for 3 weeks, a cast for eight weeks, and a boot for another ten weeks. My right foot is a 10.5 6E, and my left foot is a 9.5 3E. No, I don’t purchase two separate shoe sizes. I just purchase the larger size, and the orthotics take care of the fitting in my left foot.

So far, I’ve only found one store that sells the shoe that really fits me. It’s a New Balance style 907. They only make that shoe in one color: white. After about a month, the shoes are no longer white but a dingy gray.

Last year we tried to purchase a different-style shoe, same size and width, only to find that it caused massive blisters. I had to send the shoes back.

I went to the shoe store yesterday to purchase some new shoes because the others were falling apart. I purchased another style of shoe because I wanted a color other than white. I finally got around to putting them on a couple of hours ago, and I already know that these will be going back because they hurt my feet.

After spending nearly $200 on these shoes, I expect them to fit a little better and not hurt my feet. They act like they are simply not wide enough. I’m not sure if they make a 7E or not.

I guess I’ll be finding out tomorrow when I take these shoes back.

Tonight was homecoming at my daughters school and one of my daughters was on the homecoming court and I was her escort. I had to wear a suit and tie and I don’t know anyone that hates to wear a suit and tie more than I do.  Not to mention the torturing device known as dress shoes.

My plan was to go to the game, participate in the halftime festivities, go home and change clothes and be back before 4th quarter.  All in all I shouldn’t have to be in a suit more than a couple of hours.  It didn’t work out that way.  Thirty minutes into the game a huge storm with major lightning and the game had to be postponed.  After a two hour lightning delay the game resumed and by this time my feet were really hurting.  I managed to go through the homecoming festivities on the field and soon afterwards I was on my way home to change clothes.

When I returned about thirty minutes later only about ten minutes had elapsed on the time clock and there was a man down on the field.  Was told a back injury and I hope the young man is ok.  Normally we’re home around 10:30pm on Friday nights after a home game.  Tonight with the weather, the injured player and homecoming festivities, I got home around 11:45pm.  A little later than normal.

Tomorrow my girls have the ACT test to take and I’m really hoping they get enough sleep.  One of my daughters is still recovering from having the Flu so I’m not sure if she will feel like taking the test tomorrow or not.

And I do mean little.  A little over 14 miles to be exact.  I road to a friends house which lives about 7 miles from me in another city and we had a small meeting.  After about 45 minutes or so I left and went to another friends house and stayed about the same amount of time.  I left there, got about half a mile up the road and then the bottom fell out.  Stormed all the way home.

I got new pedals, cleats and new shoes.  I’m not sure if I have the cleats set just right but so far I’m not having any issues.  I am having issues with clipping in on my left pedal.  I’m sure it will come with time but I had a lot of trouble and in the most inopportune time.  I stopped at a traffic light and unclipped.  After the light changed to green I had to start up this steep hill.  I never did get that left foot clipped in until after I got up that hill.  I was wore out.  I stopped a couple of times trying to practice but it seemed to do no good.  I can do if fine while stopped but while riding it’s another story.  Like I said, I’m sure it will come with time.
