Family and friends are mourning the loss of well-known contractor William Robertson, Jr. He worked on the newly opened Negro Southern League Museum in Birmingham.

Robertson was killed this morning in Blount County while cycling with friends. Authorities say a Ford ranger truck hit and killed Robertson and injured two other cyclists. This happened on Highway 75 in the Allgood area

Robertson was killed this morning in Blount County while cycling with friends. Authorities say a Ford ranger truck hit and killed Robertson and injured two other cyclists. This happened on Highway 75 in the Allgood area.

Robertson was pronounced dead on the scene. In addition to the museum, Robertson also worked on the Westin Hotel in the Uptown District.

Demetrius White and Tracey White were the cyclists injured. They were airlifted to UAB Hospital.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell issues this statement Saturday: “We were deeply saddened today on hearing of the tragic and sudden loss of Mr. William Robertson. Mr. Robertson was not only an outstanding African American businessman but also a dear friend. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and his family on their devastating loss. “

State troopers are investigating the crash.

This is the fourth fatality in the last couple of months in my area.  One of the related deaths was due to a distracted driver.  I’m not sure what the other causes were, but none the less they shouldn’t have happened.

Alabama is the worst state for cyclists.  I’ve been nearly run off the road several times in the last three years.  I purposely ride in subdivisions where traffic is light.  There are two roads where I get on that the traffic is pretty heavy but I’m not on there more than ten to fifteen minutes.  But, unfortunately, that’s plenty of time to get hit.

I had some mechanical difficulties on today’s ride.  I have to take my tire in tomorrow to have another spoke replaced.  Maybe I can get another ride in tomorrow to finish out the month.

I made a bee line straight home this evening, ate supper, changed into my cycle shorts and dry fit tee shirt and jumped on my bicycle.  I was able to get nearly 15 miles in tonight.  It was dark when I got home but with the help of m flashing of the rear light and my headlight I was able to make it home with no problem.

With rain on Sunday, errands on Monday and a meeting late this afternoon  I just haven’t had time to get back on my bicycle.  I was able to get on my treadmill for about thirty minutes this evening.   Tomorrow looks promising although the darkness will sneak up on me and I will not get my full 20 miles in.  I’ll be lucky to get about thirteen before it gets too dark to see my way home.

No word on any of the stuff that was taken while he was at home for spring break.  He did receive a phone call from the detective but was not able to get back in touch with him to find out what he wanted.  My son is very upset over this.  He said that he gets a sick feeling in his gut everytime he goes into his room.  The good news is that he will not have to pay for the repairs to the door.  It seems that it’s the apartment’s place to have it repaired at their expense.  That’s a relief.  We’re already going to have to replace everything that was stolen and we didn’t need any extra expense.

Sorry for not posting any new stuff lately.  Just haven’t been anywhere to take any pictures.  I’m planning on getting out this weekend and shooting some.  There is an air show this weekend.  Maybe I’ll go there.  We shall see.

This year has been full of “New Beginnings” and not all of them have been all that good.  I refuse to concentrate on the negatives and I’m trying to focus on all of the positives.  Last year started off really bad and I was hoping that this year would be somewhat better.

My dieting hasn’t been very productive and I haven’t started exercising like I wanted and it’s already February.  It just seems like there is always something preventing me from getting on the trainer or the treadmill.  I’m always finding excuses and it’s always “I’ll do it tomorrow.  I’ve lost 40 lbs in about four months two years ago and I know I can do it again it’s just getting started that’s the trouble.

I’ve got my first photoshoot tomorrow afternoon so my plan is to get up early, get on that treadmill for at least thirty minutes then get my day started.  I need to set up a goal to reward myself for every so many pounds I lose.  It needs to be something that I really enjoy, not food, and that it will be worth losing the weight other than my health. Any suggestions?  I was thinking that every 20 pounds I would reward myself with something.

The above picture is of a couple that I shot for their engagement.  It’s been over a year since they’ve been married and now she is currently pregnant and not doing to good. She’s in her final trimester and the poor girl has been sick since she’s gotten pregnant. She’s a sweet young lady and I’m sure she’ll be a great mother.  After this one she’ll probably not get pregnant again. lol

It’s the weekend.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and I hope you get to spend time with your loved ones.

Well, today was almost a bust.  I did not get to ride my bicycle today which I am really upset about.  I have a 46 mile bike ride coming up in April and I have got to train for.  Today was a beautiful day with highs in the upper 60’s which was higher than forecasted.  The reason for the bust is that my wife had a doctor’s appointment and I had to stay at home near the phone waiting on the garage door repair man to come by and give us an estimate.  It was really late when he came by and only stayed a few minutes.  After he left I ran got my camera and my tripod and off I went.

As you can see by the photo I was able to capture some amazing shots of our cities court house.  I also got to spend some time at our cities park which is across the street from city hall. I had a time taking the pictures of city hall because every time I snapped the picture a car would drive by and ruin the exposure.  I didn’t stay long because the temps started to drop again and I didn’t bring my jacket.

Loosing weight has always been a battle for me all my adult life.  I decided on the first of January that I would start trying to loose weight again.  I was doing good until I found out that I was going to have eye surgery.  To me there was no since trying to get myself in a habit of exercising if was going to have to stop for a couple of weeks after the surgery.  I know I’m just getting back in the same routine and looking for excuses not to exercise.

I go downstairs and I see that treadmill and I get this sickening feeling down in my gut.  I really hate that thing but all it’s doing is collecting dust.  I’ve lost a lot of weight on that treadmill but I just can’t get myself to get back on it.  I love being outdoors and being on my bicycle so much more.

I will have a three day weekend with no doctor’s restrictions and the temps are supposed to break the 60 degree mark.  Come Hell or high water I’m getting on my bicycle and getting some miles in.  I might even post a short video of my ride.

This photo was taken last night at the same place of Vulcan.  It’s the path you walk up to to see the city’s skyline.  Some day soon I’ll hopefully capture an image that I’m proud to share of our great city.

Bicycle, bicycling, Cycling, Silver Comet Trail

http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/776383875#

I took a trip to Dallas Georgia yesterday to ride a few miles on the Silver Comet. Fifty to be exact I haven’t ridden by bicycle since the end of June and I believe I did too much yesterday.  The back of my neck and shoulders are feeling the worst and my legs come in a close second.

It was a beautiful day yesterday with the temps being in the sixties to start off with and the high in the mid 70’s by the end of my ride.  I started off with a hoodie but had to take it off about midday.  I am so bad out of shape that it took me longer than I had expected but I didn’t have any problems until about mile 40 when I started having leg cramps.  I slowed down and started taking mini breaks.  I was in no hurry so I just took my time getting back.

The Silver Comet Trail is 61.5 miles long, and starts at the Mavell Road Trailhead in Smyrna, Georgia. It ends at the Georgia/Alabama state line, near Cedartown and The Esom Hill Trailhead.

At the Georgia/Alabama state line, the Silver Comet connects to the 33-mile long Chief Ladiga Trail. Plans are underway to extend the Chief Ladiga an additional 7 miles. Both the Silver Comet Trail and Chief Ladiga are fully paved rail-trails built on abandoned railroad lines. The combined Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trail length is estimated to be 94.5 paved miles from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama. (Copied from the Silver Comet Website.)

Riding on the trail is very pleasant and you can meet a lot of nice people along the way.  In fact yesterday I had a chance to give a helping hand.  About 14 miles from the trail head in Dallas, I ran across an elderly couple walking their bikes.  I stopped to see if they needed help.  They told me that he had a flat and his hand pump wouldn’t work  Just so happens that I carry two tubes and two CO2 cartridges with me on any trip.  He borrowed one of my CO2 cartridges and he was on his way.  He did say thanks and offered to pay but I declined payment.  I just hope someone is as nice to me as I was to him if I’m ever in his shoes.

I’m really excited about today.  I have decided to take my life back and start loosing this weight again. Since it’s become cooler I haven’t been able to get outside and ride.  It’s no excuse though because I have both a bicycle trainer as well as a treadmill and I haven’t been on but a few times.

I’ve set new goals that I think I’ll be able to achieve.

1.  No sweets

2.  10,000 steps a day

3. 2,000 calories or less a day

4.  Use the treadmill and bicycle trainer at least three times a week

5. Cut out soft drinks.

7.  Nothing to eat past 7 pm

I want to loose at least 10 pounds by the end of February.

Today’s starting weight is 287 pounds.

Short Term Goal 277 pounds by February 28th

Long Term Goal 225 pounds by January 2015

Wish Me Luck.
