I spent the day today as a couch potato.  Yesterday wore me out.  My legs and shoulders are sore and it’s tough getting up and down.  I’m not complaining mind you, it’s just been a while since I’ve been this sore.

This past week was a slim week on the bicycle and more on the treadmill. I only biked 47 miles and yet I’ve walked about 10 miles on the treadmill.  Next week I have a lot of preparation to do to get ready for a trip with my twin daughters so my bike riding will put on hold.  Therefore, I’m thinking about putting my bike in the shop for some preventive maintenance and maybe some new tape on my handlebar. The tape used to be white but they have turned to a gray color with all the dirt and grime from changing flat tires with no gloves on.  I’m thinking about going to a red color. Maybe red won’t show the dirt as much.

It seems lately that all I’m doing is waiting on Friday to get here only to find that my weekends are filled with me doing things for other people.  I guess I’ve been doing it for so long I can’t say no.  I have a photo shoot tomorrow evening and a meeting on Sunday afternoon and I just received a phone call from my mom wanting us to join them and my rest of my family for a weenie roast for my Autistic nephew.

My twin daughters will be volunteering at a Botanical club tomorrow morning and my wife will be taking them to the event while I hope to get in a bike ride before I have to leave for my meeting.  My son, who is on his way home tonight from college, will be leaving sometime tomorrow afternoon going back to college.  He’s only coming home to retrieve a suit that we had cleaned for him.

It’s been raining off and on here all day today.  I was able to get in 15 miles this evening after I ate supper.  I can’t wait until the days get a little longer so I can get my full 20 miles in.  I’m planning on doing at least 23 to 25 miles and I’m hoping to attach my GoPro so I can film some of the more exciting parts of my ride.

Have a great weekend everyone!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As of today I have lost ten pounds since I’ve started dieting.  I started on the first day of March.  I’ve lost weight and gain it back, lost the weight again and then gain it back.  I have found out that I can’t just watch what I eat and expect to lose any weight.  I have to do some sort of exercise and do some major sweating.

When this picture was taken nearly two years ago I had gotten down to around 270 pounds.  Keep in mind I started off at 345 pounds.  The really sad part about this is that I was not at my heaviest when I found out I was diabetic.  I gained even more weight after I was diagnosed.  Once I had reached the 345 mark it was then I decided I really needed to do something.  I started cutting back on my sweets, cutting out bread and cut down on eating between meals.  It worked for a while.  Over about a two year period I lost down to about 310 pounds.

A little over two years ago my doctor told me that if I didn’t do something I would not see my son who was in his second year of college graduate.  Nor would I see my twin daughters graduate high school.  In other words, he put the fear of God in me.  I went home that evening and got on my treadmill.

I started off at thirty minutes, then 45, then an hour and before I knew it I was on my treadmill for 90 minutes.  This was every night but Monday nights and any other night that I might have something else to do but that didn’t happen very often.  The funny thing about this is that after 90 minutes the treadmill automatically shuts off. I wasn’t aware of this until it happened the first time.  I was on my cool down and was only doing about 2 mph when it shut off.  If I had been going faster it would have sent me through the wall.

Then I started riding my bicycle.  I was doing good but quit loosing weight.  I think it was because I was building muscle.  At least that’s what I keep telling myself.  Anyway, my weight started creeping back up.  Then last year about July, my new boss didn’t want me riding my bike while I was on call.  That’s a different story and I really don’t want to get into it right now.  Anyway, I’m no longer on call and I’m free to ride my bike but during that month when I couldn’t ride, I got out of the habit and quit riding.  And the treadmill was something that I didn’t care to see so I didn’t get on it either.  Needless to say before I got back on my diet this month my weight had gotten back up to over 300 pounds.  This morning my weight was 294.

My plan is to ride when it’s pretty and to do the treadmill when it’s nasty out.  For instance, this evening it was supposed to rain so I got on my treadmill.  It never rained so now I’m wishing that I had gotten on my bike.  When the days get longer I can get up to 20 miles a day and more on the weekends.

The above picture is when a group of us went to Dallas Georgia and rode part of the Silver Comet.  We rode from Dallas to just past Rockmart Georgia and back making it a total 50 miles.  I did this trip last year around October before it got cold.  I was not in shape and didn’t feel as good when I got back to Dallas as when I did  the year before.

This is me about two years ago.  I’ve since gained some of my weight back being that my boss didn’t think I could make in to work in time if I got called in while on a bike ride.  Now that I’m no longer on call I don’t have to worry about it. I can’t put all the blame on my boss being that I could have done a lot of other things to keep my weight off.  Anyway, tonight I started what I hope is a long term workout program.  I started slow, only thirty minutes on my treadmill at a slow 2.9 mph and then I got on my bike trainer for 15 minutes doing about 20 mph.  I may not have done much but at least it feels like I worked out.  I’m looking forward to warmer weather so I can get out and hopefully get back to riding my 20 miles a day.

The photo above was taken after my first 50 miler.  I know for a fact that I wouldn’t look that excited if I had to ride that ride today.  I’m so out of shape.

Well, today was almost a bust.  I did not get to ride my bicycle today which I am really upset about.  I have a 46 mile bike ride coming up in April and I have got to train for.  Today was a beautiful day with highs in the upper 60’s which was higher than forecasted.  The reason for the bust is that my wife had a doctor’s appointment and I had to stay at home near the phone waiting on the garage door repair man to come by and give us an estimate.  It was really late when he came by and only stayed a few minutes.  After he left I ran got my camera and my tripod and off I went.

As you can see by the photo I was able to capture some amazing shots of our cities court house.  I also got to spend some time at our cities park which is across the street from city hall. I had a time taking the pictures of city hall because every time I snapped the picture a car would drive by and ruin the exposure.  I didn’t stay long because the temps started to drop again and I didn’t bring my jacket.

Finally!!! Got some exercise in.

Bike Riding, Cycling, Exercise, Trainer

Although I really didn’t feel like it I got on my trainer tonight and got thirty minutes in.  I haven’t had any real exercise since I broke my rib over a week ago.  I tried riding my bicycle last Saturday but had to stop because it was too painful to continue.
