Got home late yesterday due to having to work later than normal.  I had my day all planned out before I got to work which included getting off early and trying to extend my mileage from 10 to at least 20 or more miles.  Didn’t happen.  I got to work and found out that I was going to have work the desk dispatching calls all day.  Which also meant I IMG_20180418_174749wasn’t going to be able to get any cycling in.  Not a total loss though.  I did stop at the track and got my 10,000 steps in for the day.

As much as I like getting out on my bike and ride, it’s important to me to get out and do something to enjoy the outdoors, even if it’s just walking on the walking track. Most of last year I just didn’t feel like getting out and doing anything.  Once I made it home from work, I didn’t have the energy to do anything but to shower and relax in front of the television.  I gained weight, my A1c went up and basically felt like crap. Now that I have my health back, for the time being, I’m taking advantage of it and getting out and doing something.  In the short time that I’ve been feeling better, I’ve been able to get out and ride, three times so far, I’ve gone to the track a few times and my A1c has come down a few points.  When I feel better I’m able to take better care of myself.

I got to thinking on the way home from the hospital about just how serious this past visit to the hospital was.  It was just happenstance that they found the blockage and even more so the fluid in my lungs.  I was thinking just how bad I have felt the last few months and that it was the sole reason for me not exercising.  Now that I had all this stuff done I should feel well enough to start walking more and hopefully get on my bicycle soon.

Now comes the hard part.  Wife and I had a discussion about food choices and eating better.  The wife does most of the cooking in the house and she is a working girl too.  She comes home and feels like she’s got to cook something so it usually ends up with hamburger helper or chicken fingers.  Looks like I’ll be searching for heart healthy meals for us to get acquainted with.

All these changes won’t come overnight.  My wife and I have got to start eating better and exercising more if we want to live long enough to see our kids grow up and have families of their own.

It’s been said before but I’ve got to get serious with my weight loss.  My son graduates college in December and I have promised myself that I would be at least 25 pounds lighter, more if possible.  As with most people who diet all the time, I have the want to but the will power is a bit lacking.  I’ve already instructed my wife that I will be eating more healthy including more salads and less sweets.  It starts tomorrow.  I’ll post updates from time to time.

Pay attention to your health NOW! Don’t wait until you get to be an adult, don’t wait until after you’re out of shape and don’t wait until you’re so big you can’t do anything about it. Do something now, even if it’s just 30 minutes a day, do something to get your heart rate up and burn some calories.

In the last two years, I have had eye surgery, 25 doctor appointments and 6 days off from work mostly due to my diabetes. I have hardly any vacation built up and my sick time is non existent. The diagnosis of my CML hasn’t helped matters none but there’s nothing I could’ve done to prevent this cancer but the diabetes is another story.

I’m not telling you this to gain sympathy or to draw attention to myself. I’m doing this so that you won’t have to go through what I’m going through. I want you to be my friend for a long time.

Trust me when I say that it is MUCH HARDER to lose weight as an adult than it is while you are younger. I’ll be 52 in a couple of months and I honestly think I”ll never get to where I want to be because my metabolism just doesn’t function like it used to. Either that or I still eat more calories than I burn. I do exercise more and I feel that it’s still not enough. I love to ride my bike for hours at a time but it takes too much time away from my family.

My son will graduate college in the first week of December.of this year. I have a goal that I want to get down to and it’s going to be really hard for me to get there. It’s not an unrealistic goal but it’s just going to be a challenge to get there.

Again, pay attention to your health now. No one knows better than you if you need to do something or not. I know I need to work on my weight and I’m trying to do better.

There’s no need respond or reply unless you just feel the need too. If you know someone who is having health issues due to diabetes and you know they’re having difficulties with their dieting, say a word of encouragement. A little encouragement goes a long way.
