Once again snow has completely shut down one of the largest cities in Alabama, I got just over four inches of snow here while others north and east of us got upwards around seven plus inches. Cities south of me only got anywhere from a dusting to one inch.
It’s funny though that one inch of snow can shut this place down. As I’ve stated in an earlier post, we are just now equipped to handle it. Other cities north of us has salt trucks that go out and prep the roads before the snow starts falling. We have sand trucks. Two different things. Salt helps to melt the snow and sand only helps get traction and usually makes for a messy vehicle after the snow is gone.
Birmingham doesn’t see much snow. I’m 50 years old and the most I’ve ever seen is 18 inches in March of 1993 and the city was shut down for over a week. Temps stayed below freezing for most of the week and the snow never melted. We lost power for the week and had no emergency power. We do now. We had to heat and cook our food out of our fireplace. We took all of our perishables and put them on the deck and covered it up with snow so that we wouldn’t loose most of our food. All of our meet and such we put in the bath tub and covered everything with snow. That worked pretty well. We even had a water bed at the time. Do you know what happens when you have no power on a water bed? It get’s so cold you can’t sleep on it. Luckily, we had a fold out couch that my wife and I slept on. Did I mention she was GREAT with child? I was worried the whole time we were stuck in our house thinking that she was going to go into labor. Thank the good Lord above she didn’t.
Temps should warm up quickly tomorrow morning and the snow should start to melt early on. Either I go to my doctor appointment or I end up going to work tomorrow. My guess is my appointment will be postponed and work will open around 10 am in the morning. Either way I won’t be able to stay home and enjoy the snow with my girls. I can’t really afford to take more time until I find out what is going on with my blood work.
Take care everyone and have a blessed day.

We got close to 4 inches of snow this afternoon. Got to leave work to boot. The only thing I’m not going to like about this is that my Dr. appointment that I’ve long awaited for is probably going to be postponed. Oh well, get to play in the snow in the morning.

Finally got a call from a Dr. Barton, an Oncologist at one of our local hospitals. I’ve got an appointment at 9:30 am on Thursday of this week. Now I am a very impatient man and the thought of having to wait until Thursday is about to drive me nuts.
We’ve been having some crazy weather. We were supposed to get some ice and snow today but it was a no show but now they are predicting more ice and snow for tomorrow night and I’m willing to bet that my appointment will be cancelled due to the weather.
I’m trying not to worry about what could be wrong with me and the thoughts of me having some sort of cancer is scaring me to death. I’ve got two beautiful teenage daughters and a 20 year old son that I’d like to see grow up. I’m beginning to doubt that now. Don’t know why because all I’m going on is speculation. I’ve got a lot of people praying for me so I hope nothing is seriously wrong.
More to come when I know something.

Information, Please
The story is told of a lady who was rather old-fashioned, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language. She and her husband were planning a week’s vacation in Florida, so she wrote to a particular campground asking for a reservation. She wanted to make sure the campground was fully equipped, but didn’t quite know how to ask about the toilet facilities. She just couldn’t bring herself to write the word “toilet” in her letter. After much deliberation, she finally came up with the old-fashioned term BATHROOM COMMODE. But when she wrote that down, she still thought she was being too forward. So she started all over again, rewrote the entire letter referring to the bathroom commode merely as the BC: “Does the campground have it’s own BC?” is what she actually wrote. Well, the campground owner wasn’t old-fashioned at all and when he got the letter, he just couldn’t figure out what the woman was talking about. That BC business really stumped him. After worrying about it for awhile, he showed the letter to several campers, but they couldn’t imagine what the lady meant either. So the campground owner, finally coming to the conclusion that the lady must be asking about the local Baptist Church, sat down and wrote the following reply:
Dear Madam:
I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take pleasure in informing you that a BC is located nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away, if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. It is such a beautiful facility and the acoustics are marvelous…even the normal delivery sounds can be heard. The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that right now a supper is planned to raise money to buy more seats. They are going to hold it in the basement of the BC. I would like to say it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it surely is no lack of desire on my part. As we grow old, it seems to be more of an effort, particularly in cold weather. If you do decide to come down to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit with you, and introduce you to all the other folks. Remember, this is a friendly community.
Sincerely,
(Campground Owner)

Every six months I go to the doctor and let them check me over as I’m a diabetic. Two weeks prior to my doctor visit I go to the lab and let them draw blood so that when I go to the doctor he has everything in front of him. I went to the lab last Tuesday, 2/4/14 and on Wednesday the next afternoon the nurse called and said that my CBC’s were highly elevated. She wanted to know if I was sick, running a fever or otherwise in any discomfort. I told her I felt fine. The nurse then said that it was probably a lab error but wanted me to do another lab session. I went Friday morning and did another lab session and by Saturday night I got another call. Lab work showed high elevated levels of CBC’s again. Now I’m expecting a call on Monday from an Oncologist. Hell, I didn’t know what a Oncologist was until my wife looked it up for me. It’s a cancer specialist. Now I’ve got something else to worry about.
I’ll post more when I find out more.

My dad’s truck after he went off the road this morning.
The Meteorologist down here in the south do not know how to predict snow nor the amount that we may get. For the last two days they have been predicting that we will only get a dusting in our area, more to our south. They were wrong. We got over two inches and it all turned to ice very quickly.
Here in Birmingham, if we do get a dusting of snow, the city shuts down. We can’t handle snow or ice. We don’t know how to drive in it unlike the northern part of the United States. They see snow all the time but not us. We get measurable amounts about every ten years.
Today was absolutely horrid. It started about 10 am and by 10:30 am the roads were already icing up. By 11 am the roads were so bad that people were abandoning their cars and walking back to their jobs or preparing for a very long drive home. People who only live minutes away took hours to get home. Normally it only takes me an hour to get home and tonight it took over three hours. Wrecks everywhere.
The company I work for still has over 1100 people still there and they will still be there tomorrow. All roads are closed and may not open back up tomorrow. It’s only supposed to get up to 29 degrees f for the high tomorrow.
I got within 7 miles from my home before I had to park my truck and start hiking in. I had my cold weather gear so I wasn’t too worried. I had only hike about a mile when a car approached me and offered a ride. I rode with him nearly to my house when he had to park. I started walking again when this dune buggy contraption stopped and offered me a ride. No windshield mind you but what the hell, I didn’t want to walk so I hopped in. My wife and kids were waiting when I was dropped off. Now I’ve got to get my truck home sometime tomorrow but not sure how.
BTW, my dad is ok. He only had a few stitches put in his head but his truck is totaled. He is currently stuck at the hospital and will have to wait until we find suitable transportation to get him home. He’s warm and being taken care of so he’s good.

Had a great time today spending it with my daughters and their friend. We went to a ski resort here in Alabama. Sounds funny but it’s true. We do have a ski resort here in the deep south. It’s all man made but it’s snow. It has to be below 28 degrees f at night and the humidity has to be below 30 percent before they can make the stuff and the way the weather has been lately they haven’t had any trouble making it.

With a high of 62 degrees f it was a perfect opportunity for me to get a ride in today. It was the first chance I’ve gotten since December. The weather here has just been too cold. In fact, it’s going back down next week with the high’s only reaching the 30’s. I hate the cold weather.
I was able to get in just over 21 miles today and I enjoyed every minute of it. I had no dogs chase me but I did have to stop a couple of times to catch my breath. It’s been over a month so I’m way out of shape. Don’t know when I’ll get a chance to get back out there and ride but there’s that dreaded treadmill.
