This has been my view all day because all we’re getting is rain. Not frozen rain, just cold rain.  I just heard on the news that 20 miles north of us someone built an 8 foot snowman.  I’m glad someone is getting snow because as of yet we’re not.  I’m sure our company lost a lot of money because of the decision not to open but I’ve enjoyed the day off especially since I’m not having to take time off to do it.

We’re supposed to get up to six inches of snow tomorrow between 6 am and noon.  My employer refuses to acknowledge the fact and is not closing.  Even though all schools, county and city, within a hundred mile radius has closed.  Last year we had a system come through so quick that 1700 people got trapped at work because they couldn’t get home.  You would think that our company wouldn’t just go ahead and close to keep that from happening again but I guess the all mighty dollar is more important.

I’ve got several bike rides that I’ve signed up for this year.  None of which are century rides.  Right now I don’t think I could do a half century because I’m so out of shape.   The weather here has been so crazy that I haven’t had a good weekend to get out and ride. This weekend doesn’t look good either.

The S word is in the forecast again and I’m not happy about it.  I’m so over winter and I’m ready for spring time.  This weekend was absolutely beautiful.  With highs in the lower 60’s the parks were full of people enjoying the sunshine.  Today was in the high 50’s but tomorrow it will start getting cold again and then by Sunday morning it will be back in the teens. To beat all, next Tuesday they have snow back in the forecast.  Right now it’s too far away for them to make an accurate account as to how much snow we get.  As it stands now the city will shut down for just a dusting.

Time to introduce another one of my hobbies.  I love cooking in Dutch Ovens.  I volunteer for the Boy Scouts and I teach these boys the art of cooking in these ovens.  It’s a lost art and some people don’t even know how to cook in them.  I was taught by one of the best and his tradition lives on through me.  Pictured here are two main dishes, Easy Cheesy Meat and Potatoes (Top Left), Cowboy Stew (Bottom Center) and Bread (Top Right)  I’ve done a few catering jobs which fed as many as 50 people.  At last count I own 16 Dutch ovens and about a dozen different sizes of skillets.

You guys ready to eat yet?

I was informed today that an event that I have volunteered for the last eight years has been cancelled until further notice.  The event was a horse endurance ride.  The horse and rider rode anywhere between 25 and 100 miles in a day.  Our group was set up at different stations and monitored the riders as they rode through the check points.

Back a couple of years ago, you may remember when the government shut down and all the national parks closed.  The park where most of the riders camped at and had showers made available to them at first stated that even though the parks were shut down they would remain open for the event.  Well, the national guard got wind of this and forced everyone out of the campgrounds and this made the ride coordinators upset that the campground management wouldn’t stand their ground.  I can see both points of view but the campground management had no choice but to close the campground otherwise people would get arrested.  But still, the ride management got mad and said that would not be back, but they did.  The following year.  Before the end of the event last year an announcement was made that this may be the last year for this ride and that a decision would be made within a month or so.  I got word yesterday that the ride was not included in this years calendar.

It’s too bad really because I really enjoyed working this event.  The work wasn’t hard and I got to meet a lot of interesting people.  It’s a whole new world these people live in with their fancy horses and their expensive trailers that they lived in during these events.

The above picture was taken a couple of years ago of a young lady and her horse.  She had just finished up with her run and was waiting on the vet to have her horse checked out.  That’s another thing I was so impressed with, they took care of these animals better than they did of themselves.  Last year they had to put one of these majestic horses down.  The rider was told multiple times to slow the animal down but she thought her horse could handle the strain. They just couldn’t get the horse’s heart rate down to a manageable rate.  They rushed the horse to the nearest animal hospital over six hours away where the horse finally had to be put down.

I’ve got two months to get in shape for a 46 mile bike ride and I should have already started the training.  I keep finding stupid excuses as to not exercise.  Today was too windy, yesterday the same and the last few days just plain too cold.  I just don’t know what I need to do to get excited about getting back on track.  Tomorrow is a brand new day so I guess I’ll start back on my diet but I won’t be able to do any major exercising until Tuesday eve due to a meeting tomorrow night.

On a different note, this morning while at a visiting church, I couldn’t keep my mind on the service because of what I was seeing.  The church I visited today had a woman minister and she was a little short.  So short that from where I was sitting only her head was showing above the pulpit. I guess it’s one of things where you had to be there to see the humor in it.

I had a shoot scheduled for today but I never heard from her.  It upsets me that some people will talk and talk to you and then just vanish with no contact whatsoever.  Won’t respond to emails, voicemail or even text messages.  Go Figure!  So what did I did I do today?  I spent the afternoon with one of my daughters at Tannehill Historical Park.

I won’t post pictures of my daughter due to her privacy but this is a picture of the church that is there.  I adore this place.  In fact, I love to go to this park and spend the day taking pictures.  As you can see, if you click the link, that this place has a lot to offer.

My daughter wants to be a model.  I’m not going to deny her the opportunity but I’d rather her be something else.  She’s still got a few more years before she has to decide and I will support her in whatever choice she decides to make.

I hope everyone has a peaceful Sunday.

365 Photo Challenge, Alabama, Chicago, health, Photo, Photography, Retirement

DSC_4234

Well, we’ve made it to Friday.  I spent the day doing what I had to do to get the job done.  I’m 51 years old and I can retire with full post retirement benefits at age 55.  The way things are going right now with my health you had better believe that I won’t let the door hit me on my way out.  It hadn’t always been as stressful as it is now.  I’ve been at this company 29 years and I used to love doing what I do.  Now with new management with a different viewpoints make my job and everyone elses job a lot more stressful.  I’ll be lucky to survive the 3 plus years I have left.

On a much brighter note, the above picture was taken in Chicago at the Giant Bean.  I went on a band trip with my two daughters and we spent a few days there.  We had a great time.  I’ve never been to a city as large as Chicago before and unless something happens I guess I never will again.  The architecture there was simply amazing.

As I said before, today is Friday.  I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.  I know I am.

365 Photo Challenge, Alabama, Camera, Friday, Photo, Tannehill, Weekend

http://tchphotography.smugmug.com/Photo-Shoots/Laura-Chapman/i-zx723rM/A

Thank God tomorrow’s Friday.  This is the first week since Christmas that I’ve worked all week without taking off for some kind of doctors appointment.  It’s tough trying to build my vacation time when I’m constantly having to take off for either an eye appointment or a oncologist appointment.  In fact, I’m having to take a couple of hours next Tuesday to go back to the eye doctor.

Hopefully I’ll be spending some time with the family and maybe even some time behind the lense of my camera this weekend.  It’s been a while for both.  Sixty-two is the predicted high for Saturday and I might even get in a ride on my bicycle.u

The above picture was taken at the grist mill at Tannehill Historical Park in McCalla Alabama.  I love to go there and take pictures.  It has everything a photographer would want for a picturesque location.

“Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park has more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation. A miniature railroad chugs through the pines. From spring through fall, the blacksmith, miller and craftsmen demonstrate their trades. Craft shops occupy restored pioneer cabins and artisans chat with visitors from their front porches. Steeped in history, Tannehill feels timeless. The cotton gin, pioneer farm and working gristmill preserve a long-gone way of life. Hiking trails retrace historic roadways. Artifacts of Alabama’s 19th century iron industry displayed in the Iron and Steel Museum put in perspective the massive stone furnaces, Tannehill’s awe-inspiring centerpiece.
