I did not go to the gym today. I could have and if the truth is known I guess I should have. Since I’ve joined the gym on the 14th of February, I have been four days out of the last eight. I’ve been told not to overdo it. But what is overdoing it? I only work with the trainer for thirty minutes and then I hop on either the cycle or the treadmill for another thirty. Friday, I had gotten there thirty minutes early so I hopped on the cycle before my thirty-minute session with the trainer, then another thirty minutes on the treadmill afterward. Tomorrow I plan on doing thirty minutes on both the treadmill and the cycle and maybe some weights in between.
What is your opinion? How long should a workout last? As much money as I’m paying out I want to get my money’s worth. Also, and I know this is a loaded question, what sort of diet, if any, should I be on to maximize not only my weight loss but to help with getting my body in shape.
I’m doing a half diet. Same food, just half of it. I’m hungry, but it works. And don’t skip days. Every other is fine, but don’t skip. That’s how you stop. Seen it too many times over the years, Tim.
I’ve never heard of the “half diet” but it makes sense. Good luck with it.
I made it up for a few reasons… mainly, when you’re talking about ten or fifteen pounds, you can get away with a few luxuries. I just can’t give up some foods unless drastic measures are called for. Still, I had to do something to stop a progression from starting.
Every other day sounds fine for exercise. Your test days then gives your body a chance to heal, and heal healthier.
Food wise, for me I decided to cut out my beloved crisps, increase fruit and veg, start eating nuts and beans, eat fish a couple of times a week, lean meats, and healthier choices when out. It works for me, I don’t get hungry, I like the variety. I do slip, hugely sometimes, but it works.

Eating healthier is always a good diet but extremely hard for me to stick with. I like to snack way too much but I’m working on limiting my snacks and making them healthier.
Oh I know what you mean! You could try natural nuts, they’re great for picking and keep me satisfied. 28g is the recommended daily amount, and don’t be put of by calories and (healthy) fats. I also have dried fruits, only 60g a day because of the sugar, but again they’re a great picky food.
Heart UK recommend 28g of mixed nuts/day to lower bad cholesterol, so that’s a great option 🙂 I love hummus & rice crackers or wholegrain pitta as a snack – good option to increase fibre intake. And for a sweet craving, grapes or berries work quite well 🙂
Oooh, love a rice cracker, never thought of pairing them of with hummus though, I’m going to steal that idea 😁
I’m not convinced ‘dieting’ works long-term, but it depends on the health urgency. Keto can give quick results, but should only be short-term & isn’t great for our gut microbes that affect our long-term health. Whereas, eating more wholefoods (grains, legumes, veg, salads, fruit) provides more nutrients for us & our health-promoting gut microbes. Keeping saturated fats and sugars to a minimum & slowly increasing fibre is a healthy way to lose weight.
I’ll have to agree with you. I’ve been dieting most of my adult life. I’ll lose twenty or thirty pounds, get off the diet an end up gaining it all back again.
It’s hard to know what’s best because we’re all individuals with different motivations, so what works for one may not work for another. Also, our motivations change over time, so we need to keep re-assessing them and adapting our behaviour accordingly.
