Cold Enough to Make a Southerner Pray

I don’t know who offended Mother Nature, but at this point, I’m convinced somebody cut her off in traffic, stole her parking spot, and ate the last donut. Whatever it was, we are all paying for it.

She is currently having a full-blown emotional breakdown in the atmosphere.

Seven days ago, we were told a freeze watch might be issued. Then some warm Gulf air came rolling in and bullied the Arctic air back north like, “Ma’am, this is the South. You’re lost.” For a hot minute, it looked like we’d escaped.

But no. Of course not.

Now, the forecast says temperatures were supposed to start dropping Saturday night and continue their descent into single digits by Tuesday morning. Single digits. That’s not “a little chilly.” That’s “why do I live where the air hurts my face?”

But don’t put away your shorts yet, because Mother Nature is also predicting mid-40s next week. Awesome. A whole three days of false hope.

And now… now they’re saying snow is possible next weekend.

So let me get this straight. We’re doing spring, winter, fake spring, and winter: the sequel all in the same ten-day period?

Mother Nature is not controlling the climate — she’s playing roulette with it.

She really needs to get her act together and make up her mind. People in the South are not equipped for this kind of psychological warfare. We own exactly one coat. It’s decorative. It comes out for Christmas photos and emergency runs to Walmart when the bread aisle looks like it’s been looted.

Down here, extended cold doesn’t just affect the weather — it affects our entire economy. Milk and bread disappear. Churches cancel. Schools close if a snowflake thinks about falling. We start with dripping faucets, opening cabinets, wrapping pipes, and saying things like, “I’m just gonna let it run all night,” as if we’re on some kind of plumbing life support system.

So to whoever angered Mother Nature: own it. Apologize. Send her a fruit basket. Light a candle. Do something. Because the rest of us are out here wearing three layers, questioning our life choices, and checking the forecast like it owes us money.

Mother Nature, if you’re listening — pick a personality and stick with it.

Memories of a Winter Day

Dash Cam, snow, Winter, Youtube

Taken just before Christmas on my way home from work.  So afraid of another “Snowmageddon” which left over 1,000 people stranded at work for three days, our company decided to let us go home early.  We don’t get much snow down here in the deep south but when we do it shuts down the entire city/state.

A dash cam captured my trip from work to the first traffic light.  I edited it and added music to try to make it more interesting.

Hope you enjoy.

Here it is the middle of December and the high today was 73 degrees.  By this time last year we already had snow on the ground that lasted several days.  So far this winter we’ve only had a couple of cold days with mostly mild temperatures.  There is a storm coming tonight with a small chance of severe weather. Mostly high winds with hopefully minimal damage.  The temperature is supposed to drop next week but be back in the 70’s again by Christmas.  Really mild winter so far.  I hope it continues.

More icy weather on the way.  But first, a round of warm weather and severe thunderstorms preceding the cold front.  Curious to see what transpires and how the city will react after the no show of our last system.  They are expecting a “wintery mix”, what ever that supposed to mean. More ice, snow or sleet?

The snow is all but gone in our area.  Some areas up north got over a foot of snow and needless to say it will be a few days before they will be able to get around.  It’s funny how the weather works around here.  Next Tuesday it will be around 70 degrees with a chance of tornadic activities.  I’m curious as to see what will happen next week.

Tomorrow evening I get to go see my son in college.  We’re going to see the gymnastics team compete and my son will be playing in the pep band.  I’m really excited to make this trip.  It’s going to be a late night but it will be worth it.

The big snow event of 2015 was a big let down for many and a huge headache for others.  For me it meant a day off from work and got to spend some time with the family.  My daughters stayed by the window all day waiting on the snow. It started well after nightfall and only lasted about two hours.  Just enough to get the roads messy and freeze overnight and cause nightmares for in the morning.  Up north of us they’re expecting at least eight inches to a foot of snow.  I hate it for my kids but winter isn’t over with here and there’s still a good chance we’ll get more of the white stuff.

Everyone stay safe out there.

This has been my view all day because all we’re getting is rain. Not frozen rain, just cold rain.  I just heard on the news that 20 miles north of us someone built an 8 foot snowman.  I’m glad someone is getting snow because as of yet we’re not.  I’m sure our company lost a lot of money because of the decision not to open but I’ve enjoyed the day off especially since I’m not having to take time off to do it.

Company is closed.  Schools are closed.  Might get called in later but don’t know if I can make it in, depends on how much snow we get.  Going to take advantage of being at home with my kids.

Forecast, Forecaster, snow, Weather

I find it funny that we have four local television networks in my viewing area.  All four have different points of view on the upcoming snow event.  The NWS sets the standard forecast and our local weather personnel puts his or her own spin on things.  I imagine just for ratings.

We’re supposed to get up to six inches of snow tomorrow between 6 am and noon.  My employer refuses to acknowledge the fact and is not closing.  Even though all schools, county and city, within a hundred mile radius has closed.  Last year we had a system come through so quick that 1700 people got trapped at work because they couldn’t get home.  You would think that our company wouldn’t just go ahead and close to keep that from happening again but I guess the all mighty dollar is more important.

I’ve got several bike rides that I’ve signed up for this year.  None of which are century rides.  Right now I don’t think I could do a half century because I’m so out of shape.   The weather here has been so crazy that I haven’t had a good weekend to get out and ride. This weekend doesn’t look good either.
